YOGA for Children ?what my classes entail
The principles of Yoga for children in my classes are based around play.
I am merely introducing Yoga through play to bring about self-awareness at an early age.
I focus on getting children to sit on the floor crossed legged in good posture with spine upright to avoid slouching. I bring in a sense of seriousness to the practice of yoga as well so that they respect the discipline. For example, learning to sit in a dignified manner with eyes closed; bringing in awareness of turning their gaze inwards. Obviously they do not understand the significance of why they are doing it and neither for them at this stage is it a spiritual activity but a sense of discipline is what I am interested in.
I spend a lot of time coming back to the breath. It is important for me that they and the parents understand that breathing should ideally be done through the nose unless of course the nose is blocked. Nose breathing initiates deep breathing and relaxation.
I use imagery to structure the Surya Namaskara so they learn to follow instructions and have fun through flow. Flow is important for creativity and concentration and therefore happiness. Not forgetting of course they are learning to focus, listen and follow instructions.
I focus on building strength through a bit of ?rumble and tumble game? where I encourage jumping, hopping, the crow walk and walking in the downward dog pose. This exerts their bodies, building upper and lower body strength and encourages good circulation of blood flow. Of course they are being introduced to challenges and exploring their physical prowess.
I bring in symbolic play through acting out Little Red Riding Hood and other such imagery games. It allows them to empathise with a character and express an emotion which is significant for emotional development.
I bring in Savasana with relaxation music to quieten the mind to allow the relaxation of the whole body and mind.
I allow them to say out loud the OM mantra. This brings about awareness of being part of a group and being part of a peer. A sense of belonging of being part of a group is important for children?s health and well- being.
I discuss with parents the significance of adjusting our lifestyles for the benefit of the children?s future. Parents must be aware of the modern day influence and changes that can affect the health and wellbeing of children.
