23 Aug Mind over matter
When you get out of bed in the mornings is it difficult or do you jump out with enthusiasm to embrace the day? When you get ready to go to the gym or for a jog how do you motivate yourself to keep the discipline? When you avoid the tempting chocolate fudge cake to fit into the dress you would love to wear or having that second glass of wine, what stops you?
Scientists have found that when you do pick up the pint of beer the mind has already decided your intention and motivation, albeit subconsciously, to do so before you physically pick up the glass to the take the first sip.
Some have argued that the Mind is the largest muscle in the body. It is the Mind that should be exercised, trained for self actualisation and without the Mind it is arguable that anything, even happiness is impossible. This leads to the question of the chicken or the egg scenario. Do we need a good physical body to go jogging which increases our focus and drive or is the Mind the forerunner to the intention to jog.
I would say there are no hard and fast rules and that flexibility and openness of application is required. If and when the body gets fit and healthy it is going to demand stimulation and it will ask for activity obviously then motivating the Mind to tackle the problem.
I do feel however that today the discipline of the Mind and its capacity, flexibility and adaptability is underestimated. Yoga provides asanas for understanding the body and it also provides through practice of Meditation ?Mind? awareness.
