17 Dec Being all too human- it isnt easy
Being all too human isn?t easy!
In this weeks class with the children we looked at the dilemmas my students 7 ? 12 years experienced in their lives today.
Homework
Exams
Friends
Siblings
Parents
I asked them whether there were dilemmas with themselves that they faced as well? Yes they said, they were as follows: –
No being able to wake up in the mornings when they are supposed to
Studying hard to keep up with homework and exams.
Doing things they know are not good for them like staying up late
Not doing things that they knew were good for them like starting homework on time and not leaving it to the last minute.
Shouting, getting angry with siblings and parents when they knew they shouldn?t
The dilemmas seemed to echo what we as adults experience now and perhaps continue to haunt us later on in our lives.
Before we deal with the dilemmas it seems we also have to deal with our own shortcomings.
The children understood that struggling in both levels were important for us. It does teach us the nature of each obstacle and we gain experience to deal with such obstacles. It is only through the facing and removal of these obstacles that we build character and we get a chance to learn more about ourselves and the environment.
I used with them structured visual techniques used in meditation to help train the mind for example we meditated on a ?peaceful star? and learnt how to get on a ?peaceful train?. Through this mental training as one would use training for the physical body I explained that we are able to encourage the development of our full potential as a person when it comes to dealing with our obstacles. They seemed to understand that by staying concentrated in the struggle helped us to deal with the dilemmas in a serene and calming manner.
They understood that if we spent time practicing coming home to our peaceful state though meditation we would develop the capacity to transcend the painful and negative aspects of everyday lives.
