Why Posture is so important.

Why Posture is so important.

GOOD POSTURE AND FUNCTION

Every so often we see someone who is described as having natural grace. They move and walk in a way that is graceful and effortless. They stand for long periods without shifting their weight from one foot to another. They sit and stand in an upright posture that radiates confidence. Their walk is purposeful and effortless. They don’t suffer from the usual neck, back and knee pains that most people do.

Having great posture not only gives you a more graceful and attractive appearance, it also allows your body to function properly. Good posture radiates grace, attractiveness, energy and confidence. Having good posture is as  fundamental to your health as having a healthy diet and lifestyle.

Most of us who play sports assume the injuries, aches and pains we get are just part of the game and we come to accept them. That need not be the case. If our bodies are in structurally sound, highly functional state they became very resistant to injury and get stronger the harder we push them rather then start to break down.

BAD POSTURE AND DYSFUNCTION

Most of us suffer from bad posture and don’t enjoy these benefits.

Bad posture affects our breathing, digestion and a host of other things. It puts strain on our joints wearing them down and may cause aches and pains. Bad posture ages and inhibits our mobility. Exercise feels difficult or painful as your body feels weak, fragile and exhausted.

For most of us modern living means a sedentary lifestyle. Most of our time is spent sitting. Our bodies evolved to move, to climb, swim, run, walk, to enable us to hunt and gather the food we needed to live. Without the movement our bodies require some muscles become too weak to do the job they evolved to do and the body adapts by handing the job to a stronger muscle which leads to your posture being compromised.

A NASA study showed that lying in bed for not much more than a day can bring a decrease in the functioning of our bodies. Astronauts in zero gravity exercise hard for two hours a day to keep their bodies fully functioning!

The good news is that our bodies can be restored back to healthy posture through movement, But few of us have time to spend hours a day exercising hard.

The solution is to do specific targeted exercises that address our individual problems as this is the quickest most efficient way of correcting problems in our posture.

The best method that we have found to achieve this at Sefali’s Yoga is called MBF.

We will examine MBF in detail in the next post.
